What Helps Some Teams Solve Problems Faster?

By Declan Kesington

Give two teams the same problem. One solves it by lunchtime. The other’s still arguing about it next week. What’s the difference? Four things: communication, decision-making, trust, and clarity.

Communication
The teams that move fast are the ones where people actually say what they think. Open dialogue, active listening, and regular feedback loops mean fewer misunderstandings and faster course-correction.

Decision-Making
Some teams let one person call the shots, quick, but risks tunnel vision. Others decide together, slower, but the outcome tends to stick because everyone’s bought in. Neither is “right”; the best teams know which mode fits the moment.

Trust
Without trust, people hedge, stay quiet, and cover themselves instead of solving the actual problem. With it, they flag issues early, take smart risks, and own their mistakes, which is where real progress comes from.

Clarity
Vague goals breed vague effort. Teams with SMART goals and clearly defined roles waste less time figuring out what to do and spend more time actually doing it.

Bottom line: Fast problem-solving isn’t luck, it’s a system. Nail these four, and your team stops firefighting and starts moving.
